Is ZipRecruiter Legit? An Honest Review for Job Seekers and Employers

Is ZipRecruiter legit? Yes. ZipRecruiter is a real, legitimate job board run by ZipRecruiter Inc., a company founded in 2010, based in Santa Monica, California, and publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange. Millions of people use it to find work, and businesses use it to hire.

But there is a catch. Scammers love to borrow the ZipRecruiter name. Fake recruiters send texts, emails and WhatsApp messages pretending to be from ZipRecruiter, and some fake job postings slip onto job boards in general. So the platform is legit, but you still need to know how to spot what is not.

Two Things Are True at the Same Time

I think a lot of the confusion around this question comes from mixing up two different things.

The first is ZipRecruiter the company. It is a real business with public financial reports, a real office, real employers posting real jobs and an AI-powered matching system that sends applications to hiring managers.

The second is the ZipRecruiter name. Because so many people know it, scammers use it. A job seeker gets a text saying "Hi, this is Sarah from ZipRecruiter, we have a remote job for you," and later wonders whether ZipRecruiter is a scam.

It is not. That text almost certainly did not come from ZipRecruiter at all. I will show you exactly how to tell the difference further down, using ZipRecruiter's own published rules.

Is ZipRecruiter Legit or a Scam?

Here are the reasons I am confident ZipRecruiter is a legitimate job board:

It is a public company. ZipRecruiter went public on the NYSE in 2021 under the ticker ZIP. Public companies have to publish audited financial reports, which is very hard to fake.

It has a long track record. It was founded in 2010 by Ian Siegel and three co-founders. Back in 2018, it said over 1.5 million businesses and 430 million job seekers had used the platform.

Its ratings are strong. On Trustpilot, ZipRecruiter holds a TrustScore of 4.4 out of 5 from nearly 13,000 reviews. G2 users rate it 4.6 out of 5.

It publishes clear safety rules. ZipRecruiter has a trust and safety page that lists its official phone numbers and spells out what it will never do. Scam operations do not do that.

So, is ZipRecruiter a scam? No. Is ZipRecruiter real? Yes. Is ZipRecruiter trustworthy? For the platform itself, yes, with the usual care you should take on any job board.

That answer holds both ways. Is ZipRecruiter legit for job seekers? Yes, it is free and used by real employers. Is ZipRecruiter legit for employers? Also yes, though you should watch the billing terms I cover below.

How ZipRecruiter Works

ZipRecruiter connects two groups: job seekers and employers.

ZipRecruiter for Job Seekers

You create a free candidate profile, complete your resume upload and set the kind of work you want. From there:

Job matching. ZipRecruiter's AI matching system, which it calls Phil, works like a career advisor. According to ZipRecruiter, Phil is "powered by machine-learning AI." It flags jobs you are a good fit for, presents your profile to employers and tells you when an employer views your application.

1-Click Apply. Once your details are saved, you can apply to most jobs with a single click.

Job alerts. You get emails and app notifications for new jobs that match your search, including remote jobs.

Application status. You can see when an employer has viewed or rated your application.

Salary estimates. Many listings show an estimated salary range.

Invites to apply. Employers can find your profile and invite you to apply directly.

It works on the website and on the mobile app for iOS and Android.

A quick tip from me: since 1-Click Apply sends your profile as it is, your resume needs to be clean before you start. If you write it in Google Docs, my guide on how to add Grammarly to Google Docs shows a free way to catch errors first.

ZipRecruiter for Employers

Employers post a job, and ZipRecruiter handles job distribution, sending it to its own site plus a network of partner job boards. Its AI then matches the job with likely candidates and invites them to apply.

Employers get an applicant tracking system (ATS) style dashboard, candidate screening tools, screening questions to filter candidates, the option to invite to apply, and, on higher plans, access to a resume database.

Is ZipRecruiter Safe? Data, Privacy and Account Security

For most job seekers, I would say ZipRecruiter is safe to use, as long as you share only what a job application needs. Data privacy on any job board comes down to two things: what the site does with your data, and what you choose to share.

Is It Safe to Upload Your Resume?

Yes, with normal care. Your resume goes to employers you apply to, which is the point. If you opt into the resume database, employers searching for candidates can also see it.

What I would leave off any online resume: your full home address, date of birth, Social Security number and any bank details. A city and state is enough.

Does ZipRecruiter Sell Your Data?

ZipRecruiter's privacy policy says: "we do not monetize your Personal Data by selling it to third parties."

It does share your application data with employers you apply to, and it shares some data with advertising partners for ad targeting, which some privacy laws treat as a type of "sale." If that matters to you, check the privacy settings and opt-outs in your account.

Account Security

ZipRecruiter supports two-factor authentication, and its safety page says verification codes only come from two specific numbers. It also uses encryption to protect data in transit, as any major site does.

One honest note on history: in 2018, ZipRecruiter reported a data exposure involving users' names and email addresses, which it said it fixed within 90 minutes. That is worth knowing, though it was a limited incident and years ago.

ZipRecruiter Scams: Fake Jobs, Texts and Emails to Watch For

This is the section I would read twice. Most worries about ZipRecruiter fake jobs and ZipRecruiter scam texts and emails come from one recruitment scam pattern or another, not from the platform itself.

And job scams are big business. The FTC reported that Americans lost more than $220 million to job scams in just the first half of 2024, and "task scams" sent by unsolicited text made up nearly 40% of job scam reports that year.

What ZipRecruiter Says It Will Never Do

ZipRecruiter's own scam safety page is clear about this. It says ZipRecruiter will never:

  • Call or text you to offer you a job

  • Ask you to text or call it back

  • Send job recommendations by text

  • Contact you on WhatsApp to offer employment

It also says official texts come only from (947) 777-0011, start with "ZipRecruiter:" and link only to ziprecruiter.com. Two-factor authentication codes come from (424) 402-1647 or (888) 646-8403.

So if a "ZipRecruiter recruiter" texts you a job offer, it is an impersonation scam. Full stop. Scam text messages like this are exactly what ZipRecruiter's own safety page warns about.

The Most Common Scams Using ZipRecruiter's Name

Fake recruiter texts and WhatsApp messages. Someone claims to be from ZipRecruiter or a well-known company, offers an easy remote job and moves the chat to WhatsApp or Telegram.

Task scams. You are paid small amounts at first for "rating products" or "boosting apps," then asked to deposit money to unlock bigger earnings that never come.

Reshipping scams. A "package forwarding" or "personal assistant" job asks you to receive and reship parcels, often goods bought with stolen cards.

Fake check scams. You get a check for "equipment" and are asked to send part of it back. The check bounces after you have paid.

Phishing emails. Emails that look like ZipRecruiter ask you to "verify your account" on a fake login page.

Personal information grabs. A fake employer asks for your Social Security number or bank details before any real interview.

How to Spot Fake Jobs on ZipRecruiter

No job board catches every fraudulent listing, and employer verification is never perfect. So these are the red flags I would watch for:

  • Contact out of nowhere by text, WhatsApp or Telegram

  • An offer without an interview, or an "interview" done only by chat

  • Pay that is too good for very little work

  • Any request for money, for training, equipment or "unlocking" earnings

  • Requests for personal information like your SSN or bank login early on

  • A recruiter email from Gmail, Outlook or a domain that does not match the company

My extra check: look up the company yourself. Find its real website, then confirm the job exists on its careers page. A real recruiter will not mind you checking.

How to Report a Job Posting or Scam Message

If you see a suspicious listing on ZipRecruiter, use the report option on the posting. For scam texts or calls, ZipRecruiter asks you to email trustandsafety@ziprecruiter.com and to block and report the number on your phone. If you lost money, report it to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov as well.

What Real Users Say: ZipRecruiter Reviews

ZipRecruiter reviews from job seekers and employers are much better than many people expect from the scam stories. The user reviews and star rating data tell a fairly clear story.

On Trustpilot, about 87% of nearly 13,000 reviews give 5 stars, and about 7% give 1 star. G2 rates it 4.6 out of 5.

What job seekers like:

  • Fast, easy applications with 1-Click Apply

  • Useful job alerts and matches

  • Seeing when employers view their application

What job seekers complain about:

  • Spam emails and too many alerts

  • Applying to many jobs without hearing back

  • Scam messages that use ZipRecruiter's name

What employers complain about:

  • Billing surprises after a trial or after closing a job

  • Unqualified or out-of-area candidates

  • Mixed experiences with customer support

So the complaints are mostly about volume, billing and candidate quality, not fraud by ZipRecruiter itself. If you check its Better Business Bureau profile too, I would read the complaint details rather than just the rating, since billing comes up so often in reviews elsewhere.

Why Does ZipRecruiter Send So Many Emails?

Because job alerts are on by default, and every saved search can trigger its own emails. To cut them down, log in, open the menu, go to Notifications, untick the types you do not want and save. You can also use the unsubscribe link at the bottom of any ZipRecruiter email.

Why Am I Getting Texts From ZipRecruiter?

Real texts come only from (947) 777-0011 and are things like account or application updates, never job offers. Any other "ZipRecruiter" text, especially one offering a job, is likely a scam. You can usually reply STOP to the real number to stop texts, and block and report the rest.

Is ZipRecruiter Free? Costs for Job Seekers and Employers

For job seekers: yes, ZipRecruiter is completely free. You never need to pay to apply. If anyone asks you to pay for a ZipRecruiter job, that is a scam.

For employers: ZipRecruiter is paid, and it does not publish a fixed rate card, so the cost for employers depends on a quote. Prices are quoted per job slot, and they vary by location and role. Based on 2026 pricing reviews and G2's listing, rough figures are:

  • Standard: about $16 a day, or roughly $299 to $399 a month per job

  • Premium: about $24 a day, adding resume database access

  • Pro or Custom: higher, with extras like ATS integration and an account manager

Employers usually get a short free trial, reported at two to four days, which needs a credit card and turns into a paid plan if not cancelled. I would set a reminder the day you start, because trial billing is the most common employer complaint I found.

ZipRecruiter vs Indeed vs LinkedIn

All three are legit. In my view, they are just good at different things.

Platform

Best for

Cost for job seekers

Employer pricing style

ZipRecruiter

Fast applying and AI matching, US jobs

Free

Per job slot, per day or month

Indeed

The biggest volume of listings

Free

Pay per click or per applicant

LinkedIn Jobs

Professional and corporate roles, networking

Free, with paid Premium

Per job post or recruiter seats

Is ZipRecruiter better than Indeed? Not better, different. Indeed usually has more listings. ZipRecruiter is often faster to apply through and more active in pushing your profile to employers. Many job seekers use both.

ZipRecruiter vs LinkedIn: LinkedIn is stronger for office and professional roles where your network matters. ZipRecruiter tends to be stronger for hourly, trades, healthcare and small-business jobs.

Other legit options worth knowing: Glassdoor, Monster, CareerBuilder, Dice for tech roles, FlexJobs for vetted remote work, and Google job search, which pulls listings from many boards.

Is ZipRecruiter Legit for Remote Jobs?

Yes, ZipRecruiter lists plenty of real remote jobs. But remote work is also where most scams hide, because scammers know people want it.

My rule: a real remote job still has a real company, a real interview (usually a video call) and a real onboarding process. If a "remote job" is offered over text with no interview and asks for money, it is not real, wherever it claims to come from.

How to Use ZipRecruiter Safely: My Checklist

Here is the checklist I would follow:

  1. Apply only through ziprecruiter.com or the official app.

  2. Turn on two-factor authentication for your account.

  3. Keep your resume lean. No full address, birth date or ID numbers.

  4. Treat any job offer by text or WhatsApp as a scam, whatever name it uses.

  5. Check every recruiter's email domain against the company's real website.

  6. Never pay anything to get or start a job.

  7. Never share bank or SSN details until you have a signed offer from a verified employer.

  8. Trim your notifications so real updates do not get lost in spam.

  9. Report suspicious postings and messages to ZipRecruiter.

Is ZipRecruiter Worth It?

Here are the ZipRecruiter pros and cons as I see them.

Pros: free for job seekers, fast 1-Click Apply, active AI matching, a big employer base in the US, strong review scores.

Cons: a lot of email by default, scammers using its name, little feedback on many applications, and employer billing that needs watching.

For job seekers, I think it is worth it, because it is free and fast. The AI matching and 1-Click Apply save real time, especially if you are applying widely. The trade-off is a lot of email and a higher chance of being targeted by scammers who use the name.

For employers, it can be worth it for hiring quickly in the US, particularly for hourly and local roles. Just watch the trial end date, close jobs properly and track cost per hire, not just applicant numbers.
