9 Best SpyFu Alternatives in 2026 (Tested on a Real Site)

I ran my own site through SpyFu, Ahrefs, Similarweb and more, and the traffic estimates were 50 times apart. Here are the 9 SpyFu alternatives worth paying for, what each costs in 2026, and how to pick one without trusting a single number blindly.

9 Best SpyFu Alternatives in 2026 (Tested on a Real Site)

The best SpyFu alternative for most people is Semrush, because it covers everything SpyFu does (organic keywords, PPC ads, competitor research) with bigger databases and daily rank tracking. Ahrefs is the better pick if backlinks and organic SEO matter more than ads, and its $29 Starter plan undercuts SpyFu's $39 Basic plan.

If you want something cheaper, look at Ubersuggest, Mangools or Serpstat. If you want free, use Google Search Console for your own site and accept that no free tool will show you a competitor's real numbers.

Before I recommend anything, though, I want to show you why I don't trust any single SEO tool, including SpyFu. I ran my own site through the free versions in October 2026, and the results surprised me.

What Happened When I Tested My Own Site

Most "SpyFu alternatives" articles compare feature lists. I wanted to see how the tools behave on a real domain, so I used one I know well: saasodds.com, this site.

I ran the same domain through each tool's free version on the same day. No logins, no paid trials. Here is what came back.

SpyFu said the site ranks for 426 organic keywords and gets about 185 organic clicks a month, up 24 from the month before. It found 0 paid keywords, which is correct, because I don't run ads. Its history for the domain starts in May 2026.

Ahrefs (the free Website Traffic Checker) said the same site gets about 9,600 organic visits a month, with a traffic value of $33,500. It said 98% of that traffic comes from the US.

Similarweb's free page showed no visit count at all for the site, just a bounce rate of about 36% and 1.05 pages per visit.

Semrush asked me to log in before showing any domain data, and Ubersuggest's traffic analyzer returned an error page on the day I tested.

So for one site, on one day, I got 185 visits, 9,600 visits and "not enough data". That is roughly a 50x gap between SpyFu and Ahrefs.

What the test taught me

I took three lessons from this, and they shape every recommendation below.

1. Traffic numbers are estimates, not measurements. Every tool guesses traffic from keyword rankings, search volume and click-through models. Different databases and different models give very different answers, especially for newer sites.

2. SpyFu missed what actually drives my traffic. Ahrefs showed that most of my organic visits come from a cluster of pages about one product (Tomoson): my legit-check post, my review, my alternatives list and my pricing page. Those pages rank in positions 1 to 4 for terms like "tomoson legit" and "is tomoson safe". SpyFu's free view didn't surface that pattern at all.

3. SpyFu's competitor list was off. The "organic competitors" SpyFu listed for my site were a personal developer blog, a Mac news site, a cloud hosting company and two other unrelated domains. None of them compete with a SaaS review site. If I had built a content plan from that list, I would have wasted months.

This is the main reason people look for a SpyFu alternative. The tool is not broken, but its organic data for smaller and newer sites can be thin, and its PPC strengths don't help if you are mainly doing SEO.

If you want a deeper look at why estimates swing so much, I broke down the research in my guide on how accurate Similarweb is. The same logic applies to every traffic tool on this list.

Why People Switch From SpyFu

SpyFu is still a good tool for one job: PPC competitor research. Its Google Ads history goes back many years, and the ad history view is one of the best on the market. If you mainly spy on competitors' paid keywords and ad copy, SpyFu is hard to beat for the price.

But these are the reasons I see most often for switching:

  • Weekly rank tracking. SpyFu's Basic plan updates rankings weekly. Most competitors update daily.

  • Google only. SpyFu focuses on Google. If you also run Bing Ads or care about other search engines, you need something else.

  • Light technical SEO. SpyFu's site audit is basic next to Semrush, Ahrefs or SE Ranking.

  • Thinner backlink data. If link building matters, Ahrefs and Semrush have much bigger backlink indexes.

  • Weak data for small sites. As my test showed, organic estimates and competitor lists for newer domains can be unreliable.

  • No free plan. SpyFu has a limited free search and a trial, but no permanent free tier.

The good news is that SpyFu's competitors have caught up on its main features. Most of them now offer competitor keyword research, keyword difficulty scores, search volume data and paid keyword lists, often with better coverage.

SpyFu Pricing in 2026 (So You Can Compare)

Here is what SpyFu costs as of October 2026, based on its published plans:

  • Basic: $39 a month, or $29 a month billed yearly. 10,000 row results per search, 5,000 tracked keyword rankings a week, 1 user.

  • Pro + AI: $119 a month, or $89 billed yearly. Unlimited results, 15,000 tracked rankings, 10 sites and AI features.

  • Team (Agency): $249 a month, or $187 billed yearly. White-label reports, API access and 5 users.

SpyFu has a free trial but no permanent free plan. So any SpyFu alternative should be judged against that $39 starting point.

The 9 Best SpyFu Alternatives

Here is my shortlist, numbered in the order I would recommend them for a typical small business or content site. Prices are the lowest monthly plan, billed monthly, as listed in October 2026. Always double-check on the vendor's page, because SEO tools change pricing often.

1. Semrush: Best Overall SpyFu Alternative

Starting price: Pro at $139.95 a month ($117.33 billed yearly)

Semrush is the closest like-for-like replacement for SpyFu, just bigger. It covers organic keyword research, PPC competitor analysis, ad history, backlink analysis, site audits and daily rank tracking in one place.

Where it beats SpyFu for me:

  • Much larger keyword database across many countries

  • Daily rank tracking instead of weekly

  • A far deeper technical site audit

  • Keyword Gap and Backlink Gap tools for comparing up to five domains

  • Content and AI search visibility tools

The downside is price. Semrush Pro costs over three times SpyFu Basic. It also wanted me to log in before showing any domain data, so the free experience is more limited than SpyFu's.

Pick it if: you run both SEO and paid search and want one tool for everything.

2. Ahrefs: Best for Backlinks and Organic SEO

Starting price: Starter at $29 a month; Lite at $129 a month

In my test, Ahrefs gave the most useful free data by far. It showed my top pages, my top keywords with positions and volumes, and where my traffic came from. That is more insight than SpyFu's free view gave me.

Ahrefs is famous for its backlink index, and that is still its biggest strength. Site Explorer, Keyword Explorer, Content Explorer and Rank Tracker are all strong.

What to watch:

  • The $29 Starter plan is limited. For serious competitor research, you'll likely need Lite or higher.

  • PPC data is weaker than SpyFu's. Ahrefs is an SEO tool first.

  • There is a free Ahrefs Webmaster Tools option, but it only shows data for sites you own and verify.

Pick it if: you care about organic rankings and links more than ads.

3. SE Ranking: Best Value for Agencies

Starting price: around $129 a month after its April 2026 price change, with a free trial

SE Ranking is the tool I'd point a small agency to. It has daily rank tracking, a solid site audit, competitor research for organic and paid keywords, backlink tools and client reports, all in a cleaner interface than most.

In 2026 it moved to new plans (Core, Growth and Enterprise), and the entry price went up. It is no longer the bargain it was, but you still get more seats and projects for the money than Semrush.

Pick it if: you manage several client sites and need reports and daily tracking.

4. Serpstat: Best Budget All-in-One With PPC Data

Starting price: Individual at $59 a month, with a 7-day trial

Serpstat is a quieter option that covers a lot of what SpyFu does: competitor keyword research, PPC research, backlink analysis, rank tracking and a site audit. It is especially useful for keyword clustering and finding missing keywords against competitors.

The data is not as deep as Semrush or Ahrefs, but for $59 you get a broad toolset. The Team plan at $119 adds more users and limits.

Pick it if: you want SEO and PPC data in one tool at a lower price than Semrush.

5. Similarweb: Best for the Full Traffic Picture

Starting price: around $199 a month for the Competitive Intelligence plan

Similarweb is not a keyword tool first. It estimates total website traffic across all channels: search, direct, social, referral, email and paid. That makes it great for market research on large competitors.

But my test showed its weak spot clearly. For a smaller site like mine, the free version showed no visit estimate at all. Similarweb works best for big domains with lots of panel data.

Pick it if: you research large competitors or whole markets, not small niche sites.

6. Moz Pro: Best for Beginners and Rank Tracking

Starting price: Starter at $39 a month, with a 30-day trial

Moz Pro matches SpyFu's entry price and is easy to learn. It covers keyword research, rank tracking, site crawls, link research and its well-known Domain Authority metric.

Moz is weaker than SpyFu on PPC research, so it is not a fit for paid search teams. But for a beginner who mainly wants to track rankings and find keywords, it is a calm, simple place to start.

Pick it if: you are new to SEO and want an easy tool at SpyFu's price.

7. Mangools: Easiest Tool With a Free Plan

Starting price: free plan; paid plans from about $37 a month

Mangools bundles five small tools: KWFinder for keywords, SERPChecker, SERPWatcher for rank tracking, LinkMiner and SiteProfiler. The interface is the friendliest on this list.

It also has a free plan, limited to a handful of keyword lookups a day, 10 tracked keywords and some daily backlink checks. That's enough to test the tool properly before paying.

Mangools has no real PPC competitor research, so it replaces the SEO side of SpyFu only.

Pick it if: you are a blogger or small site owner focused on finding low-competition keywords.

8. Ubersuggest: Cheapest Paid SpyFu Alternative

Starting price: Individual at $12 a month, with a 7-day trial

Ubersuggest is the lowest-cost paid option here. It covers keyword ideas, a domain overview, top pages, backlinks, a site audit and rank tracking. Lifetime deals have also been offered at times.

The data is lighter than the bigger tools. And on the day I tested, its traffic analyzer showed an error page for my domain, so I couldn't compare its estimate.

Pick it if: budget is the main concern and you need basic keyword and competitor data.

9. Google Search Console + Keyword Planner: Best Free Alternative

Starting price: free

This combo can't spy on competitors, but it does something no paid tool can: it shows your real clicks, impressions and positions from Google.

Search Console's Performance report gives you actual numbers for your own site, by query and by page. Google Keyword Planner, inside a free Google Ads account, gives search volume ranges and keyword ideas.

After my test, this is the first place I'd look before trusting any third-party estimate. It is the ground truth every other tool is guessing at.

Pick it if: you want accurate data on your own site and don't need competitor estimates.

SpyFu vs Semrush vs Ahrefs: The Short Version

These three get compared the most, so here is how I see them.

SpyFu is the cheapest of the three for PPC competitor research. Its ad history is excellent. Its organic data, especially for small sites, is the weakest of the three in my experience.

Semrush does everything SpyFu does and much more, with daily tracking and a deeper audit. You pay more than three times as much to start.

Ahrefs is the best for organic SEO and links, and the free checkers gave me more useful insight than SpyFu's free view. It is weaker for paid search.

If you mostly run Google Ads, SpyFu may still be the right tool. If you mostly do SEO, Ahrefs or Semrush will serve you better.

How I Would Choose a SpyFu Alternative

Here is the simple process I'd follow, based on what my test showed.

1. Start with your own real data. Set up Google Search Console if you haven't. It tells you what your site actually gets, so you can judge how close each tool's estimate is.

2. Test every tool on your own domain first. Run your site through each tool's free checker or trial. The tool whose estimate comes closest to your Search Console numbers is probably the most reliable for your niche.

3. Check the competitor list. If a tool lists competitors that make no sense, like my unrelated hosting and developer blogs, don't trust its competitor research for your space.

4. Match the tool to the job. PPC research points to SpyFu, Semrush or Serpstat. Backlinks point to Ahrefs. Client reporting points to SE Ranking. Easy keyword research points to Mangools.

5. Use trends, not exact numbers. Even the best estimate can be far off. Use these tools to compare competitors and spot direction, not to report exact traffic.

Quick Answers About SpyFu Alternatives

What is the best SpyFu alternative?

For most people, Semrush is the best SpyFu alternative because it covers organic SEO, PPC research, backlinks and audits in one tool with daily rank tracking. Ahrefs is the better choice if your focus is organic SEO and link building.

Is there a free SpyFu alternative?

Yes, but with limits. Google Search Console and Keyword Planner are fully free and give real data for your own site. Mangools has a small free plan. Ahrefs offers free traffic and backlink checkers plus Ahrefs Webmaster Tools for sites you own. None give full competitor data for free.

Is SpyFu better than Semrush?

SpyFu is cheaper and very good for PPC competitor research and ad history. Semrush is better for almost everything else, including organic keyword data, site audits, daily rank tracking and backlinks.

Is SpyFu accurate?

SpyFu's numbers are estimates, like every tool on this list. In my test on my own site, SpyFu estimated about 185 monthly organic clicks while Ahrefs estimated about 9,600. For small or new sites, I'd always compare against Google Search Console.

What is cheaper than SpyFu?

Ubersuggest starts at $12 a month and Ahrefs Starter at $29 a month, both under SpyFu's $39 Basic plan. Mangools has a free plan, and Moz Pro starts at the same $39.

Which SpyFu alternative is best for PPC research?

Semrush is the strongest all-round option for PPC competitor research, with ad history, paid keywords and ad copy. Serpstat is a cheaper option with PPC data. Ahrefs and Mangools are weak here.

My Pick by Budget

If I could only keep one tool and money weren't tight, I'd pick Semrush. It replaces SpyFu completely and adds the daily tracking and audits SpyFu lacks.

If I were mostly doing content SEO on a budget, I'd pick Ahrefs and pair it with Google Search Console. My own test showed Ahrefs gave the clearest picture of which pages actually drive my traffic.

If I were brand new and watching every dollar, I'd start with Search Console plus the Mangools free plan, then upgrade once I knew which features I really used.

And whatever you choose, test it on your own site first. A tool that can't get your numbers roughly right probably won't get your competitors' right either.
