Product Overview
I have run Semrush against dozens of client sites over the years, and it is still the tool I default to when I need one platform that covers keyword research, competitor tracking, and technical SEO without switching tabs. Semrush is a digital marketing and SEO platform that grew from a keyword research tool into a full suite covering search, content, advertising, and now AI search visibility. As of 2026, it is also an Adobe company, after Adobe closed its acquisition of Semrush in April 2026.
What Is Semrush
So what is Semrush, exactly? It is an online visibility platform built by Semrush Holdings, Inc., founded in 2008 in Boston by Oleg Shchegolev and Dmitri Melnikov. What started as a keyword research tool has grown into a platform with over 55 individual tools spanning SEO, PPC, content marketing, social media, and competitor research.
What does Semrush do for me day to day? It tells me which keywords a site ranks for, how much traffic those keywords are worth, what my competitors are doing that I am not, and increasingly, whether AI tools like ChatGPT and Gemini are citing my content at all. That last part is new. Semrush has spent the past year building out AI Visibility tools alongside its classic SEO toolkit, and Adobe's acquisition has accelerated that push under a joint offering called Adobe Brand Visibility.
How Does Semrush Work
Semrush pulls from a large proprietary database, currently reporting more than 28 billion keywords, 43 trillion backlinks, and over 800 million domain profiles, along with a growing archive of tracked LLM prompts. I type in a domain or keyword, and Semrush cross-references that database to show rankings, traffic estimates, backlink profiles, and competitor overlap.
Unlike a crawler that only sees my own site, Semrush's keyword and traffic data is modeled the same way for every domain in its index, which is what makes competitor research possible. I am not logging into anyone else's Google Search Console. I am reading Semrush's own model of how a domain performs in search.
Semrush Features
Here is what I actually use on a regular basis:
Keyword Magic Tool – keyword research with volume, difficulty, and intent data
Position Tracking – daily rank tracking across Google, Bing, and other engines
Site Audit – technical SEO audits covering crawlability, Core Web Vitals, and on-page issues
Backlink Analytics – backlink checker and link-building tool for building and auditing link profiles
Organic and Competitor Research – see any domain's top keywords, traffic estimate, and competitor overlap
Content Marketing Toolkit – topic research, an SEO writing assistant, and content performance tracking
Advertising Research – competitor PPC keywords, ad copy, and estimated ad spend
Social Media Toolkit – post scheduling and social listening across major platforms
AI Visibility Toolkit – tracks how often and how favorably a brand is cited in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and other AI answers
Local SEO Toolkit – Google Business Profile management and local directory listings
Semrush API and MCP – programmatic access to Semrush data, including a direct connector for AI assistants
Semrush for SEO
SEO is where Semrush built its name, and it is still the strongest part of the platform. The Keyword Magic Tool is the one I open first for any new project, since it groups related keywords by topic rather than dumping a flat list. Position Tracking then keeps tabs on where my pages actually land in search results, and Site Audit catches the technical issues, broken links, slow pages, duplicate content, that quietly hurt rankings.
Backlink analysis rounds it out. I can see who links to a competitor that does not link to me yet, which turns link building into an outreach list instead of a guessing game.
Semrush for Marketing
Beyond core SEO, Semrush covers most of the rest of a digital marketing workflow. The Content Marketing Toolkit helps me plan and score content against what is already ranking, and the Advertising Research tools show me what competitors are running on Google and Meta ads, along with their estimated budgets.
The Social Media Toolkit and local SEO tools round out the platform for teams that want one subscription instead of five separate tools. I have not found any of these secondary tools to be best-in-class on their own, but they are genuinely useful bundled in.
Semrush for AI Search Visibility
The AI Visibility Toolkit is the newest major addition, and it is where Semrush is putting a lot of its product effort in 2026. It tracks how often a brand gets mentioned or cited across AI chatbots and search tools, tracking prompt-level visibility rather than just keyword rankings. With Adobe now behind Semrush, this AI visibility layer is being positioned as the core of a combined "Adobe Brand Visibility" offering aimed at enterprise marketing teams.
For anyone whose traffic used to come mostly from blue links and is now watching AI answers eat into that, this is a genuinely useful addition rather than a bolted-on feature.
Who Uses Semrush
Semrush is built for a fairly wide range of roles:
SEO specialists doing keyword research, rank tracking, and technical audits
Content marketers planning and optimizing content around search demand
PPC and advertising teams researching competitor ad strategy
Agencies managing SEO and content across multiple client accounts
In-house marketing teams at SMBs and enterprises consolidating multiple tools into one platform
Solopreneurs and freelancers who need core SEO tools without a big team behind them
Semrush Pricing
Semrush pricing changed in 2026. The classic Pro, Guru, and Business tiers still exist ($139.95, $249.95, and $499.95 a month respectively), but Semrush also introduced "Semrush One," a bundled line that pairs SEO tools with AI visibility tracking. Semrush One starts at Starter ($199/month), then Pro+ ($299/month), then Advanced ($549/month), with Enterprise available on a custom quote. Annual billing saves roughly 17% across tiers. A 7-day free trial is available on the entry plans, and a credit card is required to start it.
If you want to see how that compares to a close competitor, I broke down every tier of Similarweb's pricing in a separate guide, since the two tools get shopped against each other constantly.
Is Semrush Worth It
I think Semrush earns its reputation as the most complete SEO platform on the market. The keyword database and technical audit tools are genuinely strong, and the newer AI visibility tracking is ahead of most competitors on that front. The tradeoff is complexity. With 55-plus tools bundled in, it takes longer to learn than a narrower tool like Ahrefs, and the jump from Pro to Guru gates a lot of the content and historical data features that serious users end up needing anyway.
If keyword research, rank tracking, and now AI visibility are core to your work, Semrush is worth the investment. If you only need backlink analysis or one narrow slice of SEO, a more focused tool might cost less for the same coverage.
